About the Program Allopathic Internal Medicine Residency Program Graduate Medical Education Professionals Job Seekers. This includes If you are a PGY 1 resident, you must attend and pass the Advanced Cardiac Life Support Course during resident orientation. You must maintain current BLS and ACLS certification throughout your residency. If you are a PGY 1 or PGY 2 resident, you must register and sit for USMLE Step 3. In the event that you do not pass the exam during your PGY 1 year, you may still be promoted to the PGY 2 level of training at the discretion of the program director. However, failure to pass the USMLE Step 3 before beginning the PGY 3 year will result in nonrenewal of your contract. You must submit at least one research project, case report, or case presentation during your three year residency in order to graduate from the program.
